Rails Beta Book

Just in case you either live under a rock or this weblog is your only source of news:

Dave and Andy have put out a Beta pdf of Agile Web Development with Rails

Go get a copy.

I’m not even a programmer and thought it was a great read.

I don’t mind the rough look, but then again perhaps this typical kind of conversation would be illustrative:

Dean: The type in that book is striking. {see for example this}
Jason: What type of book?
Dean: Not “type of”, the type. The Type? Come on. Type. The Type! OK, ok, the fonts.
Jason: Oh, fonts. Sure. There are different kinds of fonts?
Dean: Ah, yeah.
Jason: Hmm. Who makes them?
Dean: Typographers
Jason: Really?
Dean: Really.
Jason: Wow. Is that easy to do?
Dean: Not really.
Jason: Really? They all look about the same …
Dean: They are most certainly not the same!
Jason: Oh?

I apparently suffer from fontaponia or typeaponia depending on your prefixal preferences.

But back to the book. Go get a copy and then make sure you pay them again when the release pdf comes out, I think it’s great that they made this available in a beta format and they should be encouraged to do so.

  1. So, does anyone know what the font is? I also suffer from fontaponia and was wondering just what makes a font “striking”?

  2. If you buy the beta PDF you will automatically get the final version when it’s released. No need to pay twice, even if I’d be happy to :)

  3. I’m about a third of the way through already, and I can say that it’s very good, even in beta form.

Oh, and the fonts are pretty too.

  4. Oh sure, there’s the occasional rough spot, on all kinds of different areas. But that’s no reason not to make the content available now, instead of 2 months from now, when the features the book is referring to will be less ‘hot off the press’.

  5. Not sure if this is a more widespread problem, but the Textdrive RSS is causing issues with repeated posts in LiveJournal…

I’d love to not have most of the blog posts show up 5-10 times! :-p

  6. Yep, Dean has to fix that.

  7. Bloglines does this too. The posts reappear when new comments are made.

  8. I actually kind of like the effect in bloglines – it lets me know when a comment has been added. dangerous on some blogs, nice for this one. I think you can override by telling bloglines to ignore updates for this blog.

  9. Good point Kevan. I often think the real gems are in the comments.
