Quick ZFS links update

Following up from my last mention of ZFS

There is the opensolaris welcome page

The place where you can read what it is

There are lists of docs

And a pdf slide presentation from Jeff Bonwick that should make it difficult to keep your jaw from dropping open.

Completely assuming of course that you’re a file system geek.

  1. So are we looking at OpenSolaris hosting anytime soon?

This + Niagara + SMF are finally making Sun interesting again.

  2. Thanks Jason!

Excellent pdf presentation. It sounds like everything EMC SANs can provide – and more – at next to no cost.

It’s not often I want to play around with filesystems, but this makes it so.

Keep up the great hosting! And do let us know if you make the switch to Sun. I’d love to hear the results from an independent third-party (like TextDrive) with big data volumes and an established (Dell) baseline…

  3. I wonder if ZFS would offers any big wins for home storage devices. Maxtor’s “Shared Storage Plus” was a CES “Best-of” finalist but I have not been able to figure out what makes it noteworthy unless it’s the promise of being able to serve multiple media streams simultaneously. Is ZFS suited to streaming?

  4. I found this somewhat related thread to be interesting.

  5. The presentation was very interesting. I especially liked the bullet points about scalability: “Exceeds quantum limit of Earth-based storage”!
